Interview Advent Day 12 : Kate Chilver

12/12/2017Jake Ryan

I've recently being redoing my home, and in doing so wanted some much needed house inspiration. After deciding exactly how I wanted my house to look, I went straight onto Instagram looking for some house plant inspiration. After a few minutes of searching, I found Kate's account @tribeandus . Tribeandus is literally plant goals and after checking out nearly every photo and every plant I went online to find out if I could buy plants similar to what Kate was posting near me. Turns out...I could and now I'm building my own tribe.

I recently asked Kate a few questions about her plants, work and Christmas. See what she had to say below...

I first found you on Instagram while searching for houseplant inspiration, and you certainly provided. Just how many houseplants do you have?
I have counted roughly 200

When did your love for plants start?
When I was 10 I got my first succulent which very quickly died as I had no idea how to care for him. My Mum always had plants around the house and then I had the chance to fill my own home and now there is no stopping me.

What plant would you recommend for someone who wants an easy to maintain houseplant?
I do not claim to be an expert but I do love my plants and they are all happy and healthy so the ones I find need the least attention are
Spider plants
ZZ Plants
Snake Plants
Peace Lily
Umbrella Plant

Do you have a favourite plant?
Wow that is a very difficult question so it would have to be my beautiful Hoya linearis, also I have a slight addiction to buying Euphorbia ingens and I couldn't live without my beautiful Jade plant which has been in the family for years. Plus I have the most beautiful tall shiny Rubber plant. Sorry, I couldn't choose just one.

How much of your day is spent caring for plants?
So I would say I care for my plants every day at some point whether it's for an hour or just a quick 5 min water.

What do you do for work?
I am a  photographer and I love it.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I love Instagram its full of amazingly creative people. I love plant books to, anything from a vintage "plants in colour" book to the awesome "Urban Jungle". My family and my partner @craigowilliams are a huge source of inspiration to me, watching my kids grow and learn is the best feeling and seeing Craig run a successful photography company is mind-blowing.

What else makes you happy?
My family spending time with them! I can't get enough I would spend every second of the day with them if I could. Sometimes i think about waking my kids up to spend more time with them. #mumobessed

How do you manage to find space for a Christmas tree amongst the rest of your plants? Ha, we haven't got one yet and I have no idea where it's going to go, my main concern is my twins Bodhi and Rowe pulling it over. I wonder if I can have it hanging from the ceiling maybe?

Do you have any Christmas traditions?
No, not yet but I am thinking about bringing the stocking back in a big way.

And finally, what are your plans for the upcoming year?
I need to travel, write and read lots more next year, but I will also we planning some awesome plant workshops in my local area.
