Interview Advent Day 14 : Gab Scanu

12/14/2017Jake Ryan

I remember the first day I saw Gab Scanu's Instagram page, Gab was going through a phase of posting entirely drone shots and I was absolutely stunned by his aerial shots of Australia.

It's been some time since I first started following Gab on social media and Gab still constantly takes incredible travel photos and it's easy to see he inspires thousands of photographers as Instagram is often overtaken with people trying to take similar photos.

I recently asked Gab a few questions about his photography and travelling. See what he had to say below.

Hey Gab, Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Gab, I’m a 21 year old photographer/filmmaker/artist from Sydney Australia.

I’m inspired by your photography work, how long have you been taking photos?
Thank you! I’ve been shooting for a long time, probably about ten years now. I started shooting on my dads DSLR at the age of around 12 and have been taking photos ever since.

How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as unique and epic. Everything I do I try to do it on a large scale to create incredible pieces that people look at for hours and want to hang in their homes.

How much time goes into editing your shots?
I do spend a lot of time editing, mainly coloring my images. Every image is different though so one shot for me could take anywhere from half an hour to an hour, depending on what I’m trying to achieve.

As a child had you always dreamed of being a photographer?
I never knew what I wanted to do as a kid. My mind was all over the place and kept changing. I think for me photography was a natural progression of something I enjoyed and it just happened!

Do you have a piece of work you’re most proud of?
I would have to say my aerial shot of Bronte Rock Pool in Sydney. I’ve never been able to achieve a similar shot in the last two years and I think it’s an iconic one for Sydney especially.

What advice would you have for someone hoping to get into a creative field?
Create something everyday, even if it’s something little. Work on your style and try to be as unique and original as you can. If you can stand out from the crowd you’re likely to attract attention!

You’ve travelled to some incredible destinations, do you have a favourite memory from your travels?
That’s a tough one. There’s honestly too many to pin point one. But I would say I’m grateful for all the people I’ve met along the way and can now call friends.

Do you have a favourite place?
I love home in Australia but I guess everyone loves home. If I had to choose somewhere else I would say the UK!

What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?
I booked a trip to the US at the beginning of the year with no plans and didn’t come home for three months

What matters most to you in life?
Health, happiness, family

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find myself surrounded by so many different creatives fields and creative people and I draw inspiration from all of it. I’m inspired by music, fashion, film and even myself sometimes

And finally, what are your plans for the future?

I’ve had so many plans and ideas for the future I often get lost in my own thoughts. I think the main goals are to continue to travel, grow and create. Start a production company and launch a store!
