Interview Advent Day 18 : Joel Thorpe

12/18/2017Jake Ryan

Joel Thorpe is a 19 year old from Brighton who I first discovered on Instagram as he posts the most stunning photos from his home town and some from other incredible adventures he has been on.

Joel has his own unique style and they is no mistaking a photo by Joel when you see one.

I recently asked Joel a few questions and you can see what he said below.

Hey Joel, First of all could you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a 19 year old adventure-lifestyle filmmaker and photographer based in Brighton, England.

You have such a unique photography style, how would you describe your style?
Thanks, originality is one of the biggest aims for me with my work. I’d say I focus on capturing golden moments; typically these happen at sunrise/sunset. I think my content tends to illustrate the serenity of nature as well as the freedom of youth (I know, that sounds really pretentious).

When did you first start taking an interest in photography?
Roughly 3 years ago, I started pursuing it more seriously. My style was very different to what it is now, but that’s creativity - it always evolves.

What do you use to edit your photos?
Adobe Lightroom, and occasionally Photoshop.

I’ve recently caught up on your Italian road trip on YouTube, how was the trip?
It was one for the books. An adventure filled with so many memorable moments. Italy’s incredible and so is the food.

What was your favourite memory from the trip?
Probably smashing the wing-mirror of our rental car on the very first day of the road trip. We were cruising along the winding road beside Lake Como, music blasting, on top of the world... until I veered too close to the rock wall. Looking back, all I can do is laugh. These things happen when you travel.

If you had to recommend only one place in Italy, where would it be?
Sicily. It’s unlike anywhere else in Italy and the landscapes are unbelievable.

I can see you’ve done some other travelling, where is the best place you’ve been?
That's a really hard question to answer. Despite the fact I'm not really a city-person and I forever crave the mountains or ocean, I can't help but keep revisiting Paris. I'll never tire of that city - it's so magical. I'm not sure if I see it as the best place I've been, though.

What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Hmm, one experience that comes to mind first is the time I watched the northern lights in Lapland, Finland. We stayed out for hours through the night in -20ºc, and eventually witnessed the dark sky suddenly burst with colour. It was so surreal and made the harsh conditions worthwhile.

You’ve grown a large following on Instagram, has this brought any opportunities your way?
Yes, some of my travel experiences have derived from the reach I have on Instagram. I'm incredibly grateful for that.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Travel inspires my work. Whether I'm exploring a new place myself, watching a film set in a beautiful place, or discovering locations through Instagram/YouTube, I'm inspired and motivated to get out there and create. Coffee helps, too.

And finally, what are your plans for the upcoming year?
2018's shaping up to be a hectic one. My life's changing a lot right now and time is flying by, which motivates me to work harder and make the most of the time we have. I have a lot of travel plans lined up, and I aim to cross off some bucket list items along the way like sky-diving, swimming with sharks/dolphins, you know, the cliche stuff. I just wanna live well, and make each year more fulfilling and memorable than the last. I'm forever seeking new experiences.
