Chatting with Instagrammer Irene.

7/17/2016Jake Ryan

Scrolling through Instagram one afternoon, I stumbled across the account ireneperezmorata

Quickly taken in by the incredible images I decided to find out more about the woman behind the camera.

That woman would be Irene and she kindly answered some questions from TravelFoodFilm about herself and her photogprahy.

See what Irene had to say below.

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Irene, I was born in Barcelona 20 years ago and I am studying advertising and marketing.

Apart from taking photographs, I am really fascinated by the universe of social networking and digital marketing.

I am really keen on watching series like Game of Thrones, and I love watching films of all types, but especially suspense drama; one of my favourite directors is Alfred Hitchcock.

So I recently stumbled across your Instagram account and I absolutely love your photography style. How would you describe your style?
My style is rather varied and eclectic. I might upload photos of nature, of urban streets, of interiors and some are more abstract and rather minimalist. Nevertheless, if I had to define my style in more concrete terms, I think I would go with “Street.”
Photography has taught me to appreciate the details which, without the lens, I would not even have seen.

What equipment do you shoot with?
I have a very workaday camera; it’s a Nikon D3100 with an 18-55 lens.

How much time goes into planning your shots?
It depends on the photo. There are some which are spontaneous, they just happen, and there are others for which I have an idea previously mapped out, especially when they are works in collaboration with a brand.

I really do believe, though, that you should never lose the spark of spontaneity so that the photos have a more natural feel.

Do you spend much time on the edit?
Again, that depends on the photo. However, I rarely spend more than 30 minutes per photo. First, using Photoshop, I adjust some parameters like levels and colour, and afterwards I finish editing with the Mobile app VSCOcam.

Is photography how you earn your living?
No. Very few of my projects have been remunerated. It is a very difficult field to devote yourself to fully, but you never know ... I am always hopeful I might earn money from my hobby!

When did you start taking photos?
I have been interested in photography since I was very young. My first camera was a Nikon which my grandfather gave me when I was 9. It was five years ago, at the age of 15, that I really got into photography and two years ago, at 18, when I set up the Instagram account which has become so important for me.

Who are your biggest inspirations?
I have always enjoyed looking at the work of great photographers regardless of the subject matter.
In the world of Instagram, I get inspired by artists who work in a similar field to mine. I am especially drawn to the work of other Instagrammers in Barcelona.

Do you have a favourite photo and why?
No, I don’t have a particular favourite, but if I had to choose one it would be this one, mostly because it means a lot to me. I took it spontaneously and very quickly, yet it was thanks to this photo that I got noticed by Instagram and they made me a Suggested User for two weeks.

What would your dream project be as a photographer?
I would absolutely love to travel around the world for a year being able to photograph different cultures, landscapes and whatever sundry curiosities I might come across. Ideally, I would start from the U.S.A.

And finally what do you have planned for the future?
To continue taking photographs because I enjoy it so much; I have a good time doing so and I know that it will always remain this way for me because it is a creative outlet. It should never become a dull, meaningless obligation.
Some day in the future, I would like to work in advertising using my photographic skills.
