Interview Advent Day 7 : Emma Lomas

12/07/2017Jake Ryan

I discovered Emma on Instagram and was stunned by her stunning travel photos, Emma is currently travelling the world and blogging about her experiences. She has quickly turned her blog into her full time job enabling her to see some of the worlds most amazing places.

I recently asked Emma about her travels and her blog, see what she had to say below.

Hey Emma, Tell us a little about yourself.
Hey everyone, I'm Emma! I'm 21 years old, currently live in Sydney, Australia however I was born and grew up in a small village near Oxford, England. I moved to Sydney three years ago to start University. A few weeks ago, I graduated from University, and I’m now officially a full-time travel blogger and social media influencer! I’ve always had a passion for travelling, having visited 43 countries before turning 21, my ultimate goal is to travel to every country. Ever since a young age I was travelling with my parents, my first big adventure was when I was 18, I travelled to Thailand for a month backpacking, which is where I met my partner Yannick. Travelling started as a hobby, and as my following grew and my blog expanded I’ve managed to turn it into a full-time job! I couldn’t ask for anything more, and I can’t wait to see what the next few years hold.

Your Instagram is filled with amazing travel photos, how are you finding travelling full time?
I absolutely love sharing my knowledge of the places I have been and any blogging tips that I currently know to my readers. Seeing them travel and helping them to achieve their dream makes me so happy, and I can’t wait to continue this journey with them. I’m still pinching myself that this is my job as I’ve been waiting for this moment for the last few years, I have some amazing destinations and trips planned so watch this space!

What is it you love about travelling so much?
Oh so many things! Every country I have been to, has been different and beautiful in its own way. I love experiencing this and immersing myself in a countries culture. There are so many natural wonders out there that money could never buy, and seeing this first hand is incredible, it certainly beats a 9-5 desk job any-day! Another part of travelling which I love is meeting new people, some of my best friends of ones that I have met on the road. I feel travellers ‘get’ one another, we share similar interests, passions and desires than people who have no interest in exploring the world. It also means you have so many friends across the globe, another great excuse to go travelling!
One of my favourite quotes: “A journey of a thousand miles starts with one single step”.

Do you have a favourite destination you’ve visited so far?
That’s a really tough question, I’ve been to so many incredible places! Before I tell you my all-time favourite destination, here are some honourable mentions.
Lord Howe Island, around a 1:30 hour flight north-east of Sydney. It’s a tiny island only accessible by a ridiculously expensive flight from Sydney or Port Macquarie, but it’s one of the most beautiful and natural places I’ve visited.
Havasu Falls, Arizona. In July, my partner and I hiked 40km in and out of Havasupai to visit a number of waterfalls. To date, it’s the bluest water outside of the ocean that I have seen, absolutely incredible!
The Maldives, who doesn’t?! Crystal clear waters, overwater villas, seclusion and tranquillity. It ticks all the boxes for me.
Okay, now onto my favourite destination. I only visited here a few weeks ago on a trip with the Indonesian Tourism Board, but wow, I’ve fallen in love with this place. Komodo Island National Park. Still a fairly new tourist destination, there are no crowds and the scenery is out of this world. The diving is the best I’ve ever seen, Komodo Dragons live there, amazing hikes to view points and of course a pink beach!
Just how big is your bucket list?
Pretty freaking big! Last year I created an ultimate bucket-list which included my blogging goals, life goals and travel goals. It consists of 100 goals! If you want to check it out, and see which ones I’ve ticked off you’ll find it here.
There are currently three destinations which are top of my bucket list however, these are Cappadocia in Turkey, Iceland and Mykonos!
How do you fund your travels?
Initially before I started earning a decent income through Instagram and Blogging, I used my savings (bad I know), but without doing that I probably wouldn’t be where I am today. I started posting images on Instagram of my travels around 2 years ago, and as a result people started liking my pictures and following along. Since then it’s just grown, brands have started working with me and I get paid to blog, travel and photograph now! So as of right now my Instagram and Blog is how I fund my travels.

You take beautiful photos, what equipment do you use?
Thanks so much! As of right now I use a variety of camera equipment depending many factors. I primarily use a Sony A77, GoPro Hero 5, or DJI Mavic Drone. Sometimes I just use my iPhone 7.

However, I just bought a Sony A7 Rii with a Zeiss 24-70mm lens! Super stoked and can’t wait to shoot with it in New Zealand next week!

I usually shoot in RAW and edit my photos on Lightroom.
What advice do you have for someone to take better travel photos?
My first piece of advice is if you’re just starting out do not go and buy the most expensive camera in the market because you think it’ll automatically produce amazing professional shots. It’s like a chef buying a more expensive oven and expecting the food to taste better. First thing is to learn the basics of photographer, watch YouTube videos and get to grips with a good entry level camera.
I also highly recommend purchasing Lightroom and playing around with editing pictures. No photos that you see by a professional photographer are RAW, they are always edited so don’t be disheartened or compare yourself to theirs.

Who inspires you?
There are so many creative and amazing content producers on Instagram, but I love Jord Hammond’s photos they are insane!

For blogging it would have to be ThePlanetD, they’re awesome!
What are your plans for the future?
SO MANY PLANS! I’m literally jumping out my seat when I think of what I’ve got planned for the coming year! Next week I’m heading to New Zealand for 3 weeks, then fly on to the Cook Islands and Aitutaki. I land back on Christmas Day in Sydney and stay for New Year. After that, I’m heading off on a 6-month road trip around the whole of Australia before flying onto Sri Lanka (maybe Maldives), Kuwait and back to Europe! I’m also in the stages of planning a road trip around Southern Europe and also ticking off my top three bucket list destinations!

You’ll have to follow me on Instagram to travel along on my journey! <3
